Black vs Brown Tulsi Kanthi Beads: What's the Difference?

5 min read · Updated 2026-07-16

One of the most common questions when buying a Tulsi kanthi is whether to choose black or brown beads — and whether the colour means anything. The short answer: both are pure Tulsi, and the colour is a matter of the wood and its finishing, not of sanctity or rank.

Why Tulsi beads come in different colours

Tulsi wood is naturally a warm brown. The bead's final colour depends on which part of the wood is used, its age, and the traditional finishing — many beads are rubbed with ghee or oil, which deepens them over time toward a rich dark brown or near-black. So a black kanthi is usually simply an aged or finished brown one.

Choosing between them

  • Brown: shows the natural wood grain clearly, feels 'newer', and tends to lighten and polish with daily wear against the skin.
  • Black / dark brown: a deeper, quieter look that hides daily marks well; often preferred by those who wear the mala continuously.
  • Both: identical in how they are worn and honoured — the choice is entirely personal.

Caring for the colour

  • Let the beads darken naturally — this is normal and traditional, a sign of a mala that is worn and lived with.
  • Keep them dry and clean; avoid soap and harsh chemicals, which can strip the finish unevenly.
  • A light rub with a clean, dry cloth restores the shine on both colours.

Frequently Asked

Is a black Tulsi mala better than a brown one?
No. Both are genuine Tulsi and are worn the same way. Black beads are usually just brown Tulsi deepened by age or ghee finishing. Choose by preference, not rank.
Will my brown Tulsi mala turn black over time?
It often darkens with daily wear, skin oils and traditional ghee finishing — many brown malas gradually deepen toward dark brown or near-black. This is natural and considered auspicious.
Which colour lasts longer?
Both last equally when cared for. Darker beads hide everyday marks better, while brown beads show the grain and polish attractively with use.
