Which Rudraksha Should You Wear? Mukhi Guide (1 to 14 Mukhi)

7 min read · Updated 2026-07-11

Rudraksha beads are classified by their mukhis — the natural vertical clefts running from top to bottom. Each face count is linked to a planet and a deity, and is traditionally worn for a different purpose. Choosing the right one begins with knowing what each mukhi governs.

The mukhi guide, 1 to 14

  • 1 Mukhi — Lord Shiva — supreme focus, detachment, liberation (very rare and premium).
  • 2 Mukhi — Ardhanareeshwara, the Moon — harmony, relationships, emotional balance.
  • 3 Mukhi — Agni (Fire), Mars — confidence, release of past guilt, fresh starts.
  • 4 Mukhi — Brahma, Mercury — knowledge, speech, learning and memory.
  • 5 Mukhi — Kalagni Rudra, Jupiter — calm, health, general well-being (the universal bead).
  • 6 Mukhi — Kartikeya, Venus — willpower, grounding, charm and relationships.
  • 7 Mukhi — Mahalakshmi, Saturn — wealth, prosperity, relief from Saturn's hardship.
  • 8 Mukhi — Ganesha, Rahu — removal of obstacles and success in new ventures.
  • 9 Mukhi — Durga, Ketu — courage, energy and protection.
  • 10 Mukhi — Vishnu — all-round protection and peace; pacifies negativity.
  • 11 Mukhi — Hanuman — courage, wisdom and steadiness.
  • 12 Mukhi — Surya (the Sun) — leadership, vitality and radiance.
  • 13 Mukhi — Kamadeva, Indra — charm, magnetism and fulfilment of desires.
  • 14 Mukhi — Hanuman / Shiva ('Deva Mani') — intuition and strong protection (premium).

How to choose your bead

  • By purpose: wealth → 7 or 8 Mukhi; focus/spirituality → 1 or 5 Mukhi; courage/protection → 9, 11 or 14 Mukhi.
  • By planet: strengthen a weak planet in your chart with its corresponding mukhi (e.g. Saturn → 7 Mukhi).
  • As a combination: many wear a mala mixing beads, or a single powerful bead capped in silver or gold.

Wearing rules and authenticity

  • Traditionally first worn on a Monday after dipping in water and reciting 'Om Namah Shivaya'.
  • Keep it clean, remove it while bathing to protect the thread, and re-oil beads occasionally.
  • Verify authenticity by X-ray or lab report — genuine beads show natural, irregular mukhi lines and an internal seed structure matching the face count.

Frequently Asked

Which Rudraksha is best for money and wealth?
The 7 Mukhi (ruled by Mahalakshmi and Saturn) and the 8 Mukhi (Ganesha) are the traditional wealth and obstacle-clearing beads.
Can anyone wear a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha?
Yes — the 5 Mukhi is considered universally auspicious and requires no birth chart, which is why it is used for japa malas.
Which Rudraksha is the rarest?
The 1 Mukhi round bead (Lord Shiva) is among the rarest and most premium, followed by very high mukhi beads.
How do I know my Rudraksha is real?
Genuine beads have natural, irregular mukhi lines running pole to pole and natural surface pores. For certainty, get an X-ray or laboratory report — water tests alone are not conclusive.
