Vastu for the Pooja Room: Direction, Idol Placement & Mistakes
6 min read · Updated 2026-07-11
In Vastu Shastra, the pooja room is the spiritual heart of the home, and its placement is considered to shape the flow of positive energy through the whole house. Getting a few fundamentals right matters more than any decoration.
The best direction for a pooja room
- North-east (Ishanya) is the ideal zone — it is associated with divine energy and morning light.
- East is the next best direction; north is also acceptable.
- Avoid the south, and avoid placing the mandir in a bedroom, under stairs, or against a bathroom wall.
How to place the idols
- Set idols a few inches away from the wall, not flush against it.
- Keep them at a height where your gaze is slightly upward when seated — never directly on the floor.
- You should sit facing east or north while praying; so the idols typically face west or south toward you.
- Do not let two idols face each other, and keep only well-formed, undamaged murtis.

Mistakes to avoid
- Placing the mandir in a bedroom or directly above/below a toilet.
- Idols facing each other or facing the door directly.
- Keeping chipped, cracked or broken idols and photos of the deceased in the pooja area.
- Storing clutter, shoes or dustbins near the altar — Vastu reads clutter as blocked energy.
Frequently Asked
- Which direction is best for a pooja room?
- The north-east (Ishanya) corner is the most auspicious, with east as the next best. Avoid the south and never place it in a bedroom, under stairs, or against a bathroom wall.
- Which direction should we face while praying?
- Sit facing east or north. Idols are placed so that you look slightly upward at them while facing those directions.

- Where should the lamp be placed in the mandir?
- Place the oil lamp in the south-east corner of the altar, the direction associated with the fire element (Agni).
