Gemstones for Each Zodiac Sign (Rashi Ratna): The 12-Sign Guide
7 min read · Updated 2026-07-11
One of the most common questions in Jyotish is simply: which gemstone is for my zodiac sign? The traditional answer follows a clear logic — each of the twelve rashis is governed by a planet, and each planet has one primary gemstone. Wear the stone of your sign's ruling planet, and you strengthen that planet's influence in your life.

Life stone, lucky stone, and Navratna
Astrologers often distinguish the 'life stone' (jeevan ratna, tied to your ascendant's lord), a supportive 'lucky stone' for the current planetary period (dasha), and caution stones to avoid. When a single planet cannot be singled out, the Navratna — all nine gemstones set together in their prescribed order — is worn to balance every planetary influence at once.

How to buy the right stone
- Confirm your ruling planet from your chart, not just your sun sign.
- Insist on a natural, untreated stone with an independent lab certificate (IGI, GRS or GIA).
- Size it to your body weight — a common guide is about one ratti per twelve kilograms.
- Set it in the metal traditional to that planet (gold for Jupiter/Sun, silver for Moon/Venus, etc.) and activate it on the planet's weekday.
Frequently Asked
- Which gemstone is best for my zodiac sign?
- Wear the gemstone of your sign's ruling planet — e.g. Ruby for Leo (Sun), Pearl for Cancer (Moon), Yellow Sapphire for Sagittarius and Pisces (Jupiter). For a precise choice, base it on your full birth chart.
- Can I wear a gemstone based only on my sun sign?
- It's a reasonable starting point, but Jyotish traditionally uses the Moon sign or ascendant and the strength of planets in your chart. A chart reading gives a more accurate recommendation.
- What if no single stone suits my chart?
- The Navratna — nine gemstones set in their prescribed celestial order — is worn to harmonise all nine planetary influences together.
- Do I need a certificate for an astrological gemstone?
- Yes. Insist on a report from an independent laboratory stating the stone is natural and disclosing any treatment. In-house seller certificates are not sufficient.
