Which Finger to Wear Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) — Complete Rules
6 min read · Updated 2026-07-10
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), Yellow Sapphire — Pukhraj — is the gemstone of Brihaspati, or Guru, the planet Jupiter. Because each finger is traditionally linked to a planet, the finger you choose is not cosmetic: it is meant to seat the stone on the channel of the planet it belongs to.
Which finger — and why the index finger
The index finger (the forefinger, next to the thumb) is traditionally assigned to Jupiter. Since Pukhraj is Jupiter's stone, it is worn there so the two align. This is the single most consistent rule across Jyotish traditions.
The metal, day and time
- Metal: gold is traditional for Pukhraj, as gold is considered sympathetic to Jupiter. Panchdhatu (five metals) is an accepted alternative.
- Day: Thursday (Guruvar), the day of Jupiter.
- Time: the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha), in the morning within about an hour of sunrise.
- Preparation: the ring is usually dipped in raw milk or Ganga water and the Jupiter mantra 'Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Guruve Namah' is recited 108 times before wearing.
What weight should you wear?
A widely used guideline is roughly one ratti (about 0.91 carat) for every twelve kilograms of body weight. For most adults this lands between 5 and 7 ratti. Heavier is not automatically better — an astrologer sizes the stone to the strength of Jupiter in your specific chart.

Who should be cautious
Pukhraj is generally considered benefic, but Jyotish holds that no gemstone suits everyone. Where Jupiter is a functional malefic for your ascendant, or is poorly placed, the traditional advice is to consult an astrologer before wearing it. Treat any gemstone as a supportive practice, not a medical or financial guarantee.
How to buy a real Pukhraj
- Insist on a certificate from an independent laboratory (IGI, GRS or GIA) — not an in-house 'certificate' from the seller.
- Check that the report states 'natural' and discloses treatment. 'Unheated' natural stones are the most prized.
- Confirm origin. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) sapphires are the classic Jyotish choice.
- Avoid stones that are suspiciously cheap for their size — glass, synthetic corundum and heavily treated material are common substitutes.
Frequently Asked
- Can I wear Yellow Sapphire on any finger?
- Traditionally no. Pukhraj is worn on the index finger because that finger is governed by Jupiter, the ruling planet of the stone. Wearing it elsewhere is considered to break the planetary alignment the ring is meant to create.
- Which hand — left or right?
- The working (dominant) hand. For most people that is the right hand; left-handed wearers use the left.
- Does Yellow Sapphire have to be set in gold?
- Gold is traditional because it is considered sympathetic to Jupiter, but Panchdhatu (a five-metal alloy) is an accepted alternative.
- How quickly does Pukhraj show effect?
- In tradition, a well-suited stone is said to begin showing effect within a few days to a few weeks. This is a belief system, not a measurable guarantee.
