Which Ganesha Idol for Home? Trunk Direction, Material & Placement
6 min read · Updated 2026-07-11
Lord Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the deity of auspicious beginnings, which is why a Ganesha idol is often the first murti a household installs. But not every Ganesha idol is meant for the home — trunk direction, posture and material all carry meaning.
Trunk direction: left, right or straight
- Left-trunk (Idampuri): the trunk curves to Ganesha's left. Linked to the Moon channel, peace and prosperity — the recommended, forgiving choice for home worship.
- Right-trunk (Siddhi Vinayaka): the trunk curves right. Considered more powerful and demanding — it requires strict, uninterrupted ritual, so it is usually kept in temples.
- Straight trunk: rare, associated with spiritual awakening and Kundalini; uncommon for household shrines.
Posture and material
- Posture: a sitting (Lalitasana) Ganesha signifies stability and calm and is preferred for the home; standing idols suggest ambition and movement.
- Brass or Panchaloha: ideal for a permanent, daily-worship idol.
- Silver: associated with wealth and the Moon.
- Crystal (sphatik): for peace and clarity.
- Clay or turmeric: traditional for Ganesh Chaturthi festival puja and eco-friendly visarjan.

- Two Ganesha idols facing each other, or placement near a bathroom or under stairs, are avoided.
